What did we learn from London Climate Action Week?

London Climate Action Week was a great time to get a conversation started - so what did we learn?

During London Climate Action Week, we ran a workshop with health and climate professionals. We investigated how the issues could be addressed simultaneously, and how targeted support for community groups can help us address these issues more effectively.

We have mapped out the key points raised and published as a mindmap here.

Connecting Health and Climate in London

In the first session we discussed the links between health and climate, and best practice case studies of joined up action. The links were manifold, with some of the key points identified being (these are mapped as Outcomes in the mindmap):

  • Mental Health
  • Air Quality
  • New diseases
  • Soil health and healthy diets.

Many of the best practice examples (shown as Actions) highlighted how community groups already help address these issues. Yet the ability of these groups to deliver is often hampered by their reliance on the goodwill of their members, so their impact could easily be increased with some additional support.

We then zoomed in on community groups, such as our partner projects The Brixton Project and Together We Ride. These projects already build resilience and support physical health, but a few examples of how this impact could be increased included:

  • Social prescribing membership, with a payment to the relevant community group for delivering the service,
  • Training for the community group to be able to educate their members on other issues; managing overheating during heat-waves, healthy diets and responding to consultation.

Have a look at the mindmap to see more of the best practices.
