OnePlanet provides a tool and a framework to deliver nature-based projects, applicable from site-specific to landscape scale.
OnePlanet supports work for nature recovery by bringing relevant strategies and policies into a common language. This allows for gap analysis, comparison of strategies, and allows users to reorganise and filter the data by factors of their choosing. For example, the Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP) lens can be applied to any strategy, immediately applied or switched with another for instant reading and reporting.
Using ‘Shared Outcomes’, actions across these strategies can be easily coordinated, with multiple stakeholders contributing towards common goals, sharing best practices, and learning from each other. Similarly, ‘Shared Indicators’ can be instantly reported on via OnePlanet’s functionality, which combines relevant monitoring data from stakeholders into a report.
Natural systems function via interconnectivity. OnePlanet’s graph databases can reflect this type of interrelated data, whereas data stored in rows and columns would be unable to effectively display the complexity of the system.
With only half its natural biodiversity intact, the UK is ranked amongst the worst in the world for nature decline. In response to this urgent problem, the UK government has set out the goal of creating a ‘Nature Recovery Network’ of wildlife-rich areas across England.
This network will consist of around 50 Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRSs), combining a detailed local-scale approach with the pressure of a new statutory requirement (Environment Act, 2021). To undertake this, the national government has appointed County Councils as the ‘Responsible Authorities’ to guide the preparation of each LNRS.
