Prepping – my top ten tips

With new figures coming out daily, it can be easy to be swamped by climate anxiety, here are some top tips for combatting it.

Climate Prepping in 2024

With climate change accelerating and geopolitical tensions rising, your anxiety may be increasing as well.  One way to tackle the anxiety is to accept your fears and to think about how to prep – not necessarily hoarding cans of beans, but thinking of how to build your personal resilience in a way that is good for you, good for your community, and good for the planet.

Here are my top ten tips for a joined-up way to prep:

1. Get mentally healthy

Practice meditation and mindfulness.  Mental health is probably the single most important factor in resilience and being able to adapt and deal with the expected and unexpected.

2. Get physically healthy

Eat well, get enough sleep, be physically active.  Think about a  diet high in local organic, seasonal food, mainly plant-based, low ultra-processed.

3. Get spiritually healthy

Spend time in nature and/or join a faith community. Nature has a deep subconscious impact on us and spending time in nature can also improve your gut microbiome, the community of organisms in your gut which help keep you healthy.  Being part of a faith community can have lots of health benefits.

4. Do less, make time

Stop running around like a headless chicken, travel less. Find ways to make your life more local.  Give yourself time to prepare healthy food.

5. Buy less

Save money, save resources and enjoy life without consuming.  Spend more time with family and friends, cooking and eating together.

6. Grow your own veg and buy local

Reconnect with the living systems on which we depend through growing and eating your own and/or local produce. Enjoy the seasons.

7. Support local renewable energy

Generate some if you can, support a community energy company.  Think about how you can reduce energy consumption to save money and live more freely.

8. Get to know your neighbours

Say ‘hello’, invite them for a cup of tea, have a street party.  Local networks are important in times of trouble.

9. Learn a martial art

Build confidence in mind, body and spirit – transform into a peaceful warrior. Self-defence is important but it can help develop a healthy confidence keeps you out of trouble.

10. Talk about things to neighbours, friends and family

Share your hopes and fears and let them share theirs. Find ways to support each other. Start exploring the reality that everything is interconnected.
