How joined-up will the party manifestos be?

How joined-up will the party manifestos be?

Ecological tipping points are being crossed - with the general election around the corner, how joined-up will the UK party manifestos be on climate?

Ecological tipping points are being crossed, and it’s crunch time for action, adaptation, and mitigation on the climate and ecological crises; now more than ever. You only have to read the data coming from global sea temperatures to feel highly concerned.

And…

It’s a General Election year in the UK, expected to be held in the Autumn.

We are looking forward to systems-mapping the main political party manifestos ahead of a general election, which is likely to be held in the autumn. Rather than just understanding how the parties are addressing single issues, we want to shed light on how  joined-up they are around key ‘Shared Outcomes across health, climate, nature and equityall of which underpin a thriving economy and ecology.

Important to note:

Whilst we work closely with Councils around the UK and with central government, including the Cabinet Office, at OnePlanet we are not party affiliated in any way.

Key takeaways from this blog:

  • We are going to use the Young Leaders Manifesto to assess the main party Manifestos ahead of the UK General Election.
  • Any Manifestos or Party-related content on our system has been input with the intention of objectivity.
  • As an organisation, we are interested in facilitating cross-party collaboration.
  • We work with the idea that systemic change requires upheaval and radical collaboration. We try to use our tool to find ways to do so.

The plan:

We want to use our systems-mapping tool to translate the main party manifestos into the OnePlanet platform and feedback on them based on how well they address the Young Leaders’ Manifesto.

The Young Leaders’ Manifesto is a collaborative, living document created by young people around the UK to communicate what activity needs to be taken for a livable future, without restrictions placed upon them.

You can read more about the Young Leaders Manifesto here

Importantly, we will not be changing the information from Party strategies or manifestos, we will be converting it into our ‘language’ of Outcomes, Actions and Indicators so that it is explorable as a systems-mapped Mindmap. We will do our best to maintain original wording and meaning from the manifestos we map. The point of this is to represent the manifesto’s information as a system, so that we can better understand it, and then find connections, gaps and opportunities to improve between the parties.

To support this work, the Customer team alongside the Tech Development team are looking at how to develop ‘negative’ linking. This is so that an Action can be shown to having multiple cost-benefits towards various Outcomes, those which contribute as well as detract from achieving them.

Accessibility of this work:

Once systems-mapped, party manifestos will be published on our platform, so they are explorable for all, without a need to login to OnePlanet.
