I was totally blown away by Wayne Francis when he spoke alongside other inspiring speakers at our online workshop on ‘Climate and Health’ during London Climate Action Week.
Wayne’s story is an incredible one. You can hear some of it in this short video:
Struggling in Lockdown and with home schooling, Wayne started to put on weight and suffer from health problems. He took to cycling and it transformed his life. He lost weight and took control of his health. GPs describe this as becoming ‘health activated’. Wayne didn’t stop there – he founded Together We Ride.
With up to 80% of current NHS spending caused by unhealthy diets, lifestyles, inequality, and pollution, spending more on the NHS is not going to help tackle the key determinants of health. This is where community groups can come in, and at very low cost, they can support healthy activities, strong communities, and climate action.
Funded by Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation through their Impact on Urban Health initiative, and working with brilliant community development organisation, The Brixton Project, we are piloting using OnePlanet technology to empower community groups in Lambeth and Southwark.
Could OnePlanet form the basis of a quantifiable Green Social Prescribing platform? I think so. Watch this space.
