National Policies Mapping

In this new workspace, we’ve created a space for National Strategies, including England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the UK.

What are we doing?

Have you ever wondered what the UK’s key policies are, and how they relate to each other? Do you think they are internally aligned to ensure that they are all meeting the same set of Outcomes? What are these Outcomes?

We are creating a publicly available resource consisting of high-level national strategies and policies input into a single policy ecosystem using the OnePlanet platform, so hopefully we’ll all be able to find out.

So far, we have systems-mapped seven strategies, including the Environment Improvement Plan, the Active Travel and the Net Zero Strategy into this workspace. You can explore all which have been published to date here.

On the published plans page, you can explore the Outcomes, Actions, and Indicators in a mindmap in the One Planet Living lens. This allows you to:

  • Easily see what the plans are aiming to achieve – Outcomes
  • What they are planning to do – Actions
  • Use the lens to compare the plans.

Project Ambition?

We intend to make all key UK strategies available through this work, and use Shared Outcomes, enabling you to explore how each plan is aligned with key national priorities, such as tackling climate change or promoting equity.

  1. To create a resource for all to understand what national level strategies contain via the simple OnePlanet language of OAIs.
  2. To fill a gap at the top level of strategy that users could benefit from understanding in the same place as their own strategies.
  3. To create guidance for local governments and business to know how to align with national policy requirements.

Firstly, exploring strategies via ‘Mindmap’ view and use of the filters can be a far more accessible and effective communication tool which facilitates understanding of a strategy’s contents that a traditional document format. Viewers can understand what they’re interested in by filtering the nodes visible on screen, then build up the rest of the mindmap whilst learning how various elements relate to one another.

Secondly, any of our users’ internal strategies can be linked to any of the National Strategies. As a result, they are just a click or two away from understanding how any activity in their workspace relates to these top-level plans, policies, and strategies. Furthermore, this can be included in any reporting they do on the platform.

For example, a County Council may use the platform to understand how their own plans relate to and support fulfilment of Outcomes within the high-level strategies. Through the platforms’ capacity to link data in a range of directions, users can move vertically between their contributing stakeholders’ activity (such as District and Borough Councils), their own Outcomes, and top-level strategy.

How can I access it?

It is accessible on our website via the Knowledge Hub > Published Plans > Workspaces > Search ‘UK Policies’

You can also search for a national strategy individually if you know exactly what you’re looking for.
