This is a blog from OnePlanet’s collaborator Finlay Gribbin
Over the last few weeks, OnePlanet has had the privilege of collaborating with Aperture Strategy, a firm unique for its innovative approach to navigating complex systems.
This philosophy highlights that effective strategy depends on a recognising the limits of what we actually know. It relied on both effective communication with stakeholders, and embracing uncertainty within a system. They use the ‘Four Frames’ model to highlight this, offering a complete service from strategy development into implementation.
This joined-up thinking aligns well with OnePlanet’s focus on interconnectedness and collaboration. Together, we mapped some of Aperture’s recent work onto the OnePlanet software, ahead of presenting it at the recent Systems Thinking Conference in Hull.
Using a case study on improving the credibility and effectiveness of a Stroke Stewardship Group within the NHS in Essex, we mapped the ‘Four Frames’ into different lenses in the software. Following this, we were also able to map the qualitative quarterly progress data, effectively visualising both the system as a whole and progress over time.
However, OnePlanet’s capabilities go far further than creating colourful mind maps.
Beyond the Stroke Stewardship Group, we added some new plans to the workspace, with mock-up case studies of work that different groups in the NHS (eg GP surgeries, ambulance trusts etc.) could take towards a specific shared outcome. Presenting this at the conference demonstrated how actions done by separate, often siloed, organisations can work together towards a common goal.
Collaborating with Aperture gave us a new way of thinking about strategy in practice. It was a pleasure to share this in Hull, as well as to connect with inspiring systems thinkers from around the UK.
